Therapeutic or Relaxation

Jade Stone Massage

Jade stone massages are similar to hot stone massages. They’re deeply relaxing and come in a variety of health benefits, including removal of toxins, relaxation of the nervous system, and better balance throughout the body. Like most therapeutic massages, jade stone massages offer a range of benefits and have the most impact when they’re experienced regularly.

During the treatment, massage therapists use heated and cooled jade stones on your skin in combination with different strokes and techniques. The unique properties of jade allow the stone to hold heat and cold evenly. The heated stones can promote vascular constriction and flushing, allowing the therapist to work deeper into the muscle groups, while cold stones in specific areas can provide release in areas of acute tension or pain.

Alternating temperatures can also be used in conjunction to work on a specific treatment area for better results. One technique therapists’ often use during these treatments is known as trigger point therapy, which can help release tension in a specific area that’s causing pain in a much larger section of the body.

Cupping

Cupping therapy is an ancient form of alternative medicine in which a therapist puts special cups on your skin for a few minutes to create suction. People get it for many purposes, including to help with pain, inflammation, blood flow, relaxation and well-being, and as a type of deep tissue massage.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage

Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD), is a technique developed by the Vodders (Dr. Emil Vodder and his wife, Estrid) in 1936 in Paris for treatment of swollen lymph nodes. Lymphatic diseases, especially lymphedema, represent a serious problem in the health community.

MLD is a light skin-stretching massage that helps promote the movement of lymphatic fluid out of the swollen limb. It should not be confused with traditional massage. MLD is specifically focused on the lymph vessels to help the flow of lymphatic fluid. Therapy is applied to your unaffected areas first, making it possible for the fluid to move out of the affected area, or “decongest” the region. MLD helps open the remaining functioning lymph collectors and move protein and fluid into them, as well as to help speed up lymph flow through the lymphatics.

Deep breathing techniques call diaphragmatic breathing are usually done at the beginning and end of a therapy session to help open the deep lymphatic pathways. It’s not only relaxing, but it helps increase movement of fluid towards the heart.

MLD:

  • The intention behind MLD is to augment the rhythmic contractions and stimulate the lymph nodes to improve their activity in order to reroute stagnant lymphatic fluid.
  • MLD is comprised of four main strokes: stationary circles, scoop technique, pump technique, and rotary technique.
  • It is effective as a preventative and postoperative rehabilitation treatment.
  • MLD is a key component in Complete Decongestive Therapy. It shows optimal results when it is combined with other CDT elements.
  • MLD also increased blood flow in deep and superficial veins.
  • MLD may be useful in conditions such as post-traumatic and post surgical edema and palliative care.

Myofascial Release & Unwinding

Myofascial release therapy was developed specifically to address the facia, the connective tissue that runs like a three-dimensional web throughout the body. MFR involves applying gentle, sustained pressure into myofascial connective tissue restrictions to eliminate pain and restore motion.

The therapist applies firm, gentle tension to the tissues in restricted areas without the use of lotion and there is no rubbing or kneading of the area. The therapist simply holds gentle tension on the area for up to five minutes, depending on the tightness of the fascia.

Paraffin Wax Treatments

Paraffin treatments are one of the most effective forms of heat therapy and involve covering clients’ hands and feet in warm, oil-based wax. The positive effects of this treatment are myriad, including skin-softening and pain-relieving benefits. When liquified paraffin wax, the skin retains and absorbs and efficiently transfers heat to the affected part of the body.

A few of the benefits associated with paraffin wax treatments:

Reduces Inflammation-paraffin wax treatments are the perfect solution for people suffering from arthritis or other rheumatic diseases. When in contact with the skin, heat released from the wax increases blood flow and relaxes muscles. This can reduce inflammation and soothes joint pain in recovering athletes, or people suffering from conditions like osteoarthritis or fibromyalgia.
